As
part of growing up, children are constantly dealing with conflicts and
how to resolve them. Everyday, all schools are dealing with this in some
manner. To help, Shabbona School has implemented a peer mediation program.
This program helps students deal with conflicts appropriately. It also
increases cooperation, positive communication, respect and positive emotional
expression. It enables students to take responsibility for peacefully
resolving disputes.
Peer mediation prevents disputes from escalating into
incidents requiring disciplinary actions. The strategies of mediation,
negotiation and group problem-solving give students a way to deal with
differences without aggression or coercion. The peer mediation process
entails an opportunity for 2 student mediators, an adult observer and
the children with the disagreement to meet to create win-win options.
An agreeable solution is made which is followed through. Overall, the
program will create a school climate characterized by cooperation and
collaboration. |
