Red Ribbon Week started with the brutal murder of a Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique “KiKi” Camarena in 1986. When Enrique was shockingly close to uncovering key members of an illegal drug business, he was kidnapped, tortured and killed. Angered by KiKi’s death and the destruction caused by drugs and alcohol in America, the young people of his hometown in California began wearing red ribbons in honor of the fallen hero. Soon organizations, schools and businesses began to wear Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to fight the illegal use of drugs. Today, all across the country people celebrate Red Ribbon Week as a symbol of being drug, alcohol and tobacco free.
For the 2004-2005 school year, Red Ribbon Week took place October 25th - 29th. There are many activities that took place at Shabbona during Red Ribbon week.
